The history of probiotics
At the beginning of the 20th century the Nobel price winner Elie Metchnikoff proposed that supplementation with lactic acid bacteria i.e. probiotics decreases the negative effects of putrefactive bacteria and thus reduce the degenerative processes in the body. Today research has been undertaken to prove the effects of probiotics. The results of these studies demonstrate that intake of probiotic bacteria is very important for the health. It seems as if Metchnikoff was right!
Summary
There is a need for probiotics. Modern life style implies a reduced intake of beneficial bacteria. There is a relationship between the health problems of today and microbial ecology. In this relation the microflora interacts with the immune system. The concern of bacterial logistics is important when choosing probiotic products.

"The Digestive Contract"
"The Digestive Contract" is a very informative book on the topics intestinal microbiology and probiotics written by Professor M. F. Kirkman and Dr. L. Cedgard. The authors give a clear picture of what research about probiotics has revealed so far and practical experience from the use of probiotics in the clinic. The book is available on requests
